UK producer William Phillips aka. Tourist is back with a new single that will take you a little bit further (see what I did there) into his captivating world of electronic music. As the song title suggests, “A Little Bit Further” showcases Tourist’s signature blend of atmospheric synths, beats and emotive vocals but there’s something about this new track that adds a whole new level of euphoria to what you may be familiar with from the last LP, Inside Out. If I swirled this around a glass and sniffed it, I’d be getting whiffs of artistry that reminds me of Chemical Brothers, Lemon Jelly and Bent.
We’ve tracked back on our journey following Tourist’s musical exploits, and it turns out we’ve had him on the radar since 2012. Time flies doesn’t it? Particularly when gems like this keep getting given to you all wrapped up in a sonic bow. In that time, William Phillips has won a Grammy Award for Song of The Year as a co-writer on Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me”, released four albums on U (2016) , Everyday (2019) , Wild (2019) and Inside Out (2022) and he has also remixed many many artists (all of which are outstanding). On top of all that, he has performed at Glastonbury and at Coachella. If you missed out on his last album Inside Out, you need to listen to the track “April“. It’s 2 minutes and 40 seconds worth of ambient bliss that gives Tangerine Dream and Moby a run for their money. I’ve been known to just hit the one track loop option on this and leave the ethereal beats of bliss repeating.
“A Little Bit Further” is a declaration of hope and love. It samples “Song For Wilde” by Mark Fry, one of my favourite artists. I felt like his psych folk was exciting territory to juxtapose against a dance record. Having finished the track, I actually emailed Mark himself and sent him the record – not only did he respond but he said he liked it and was happy for me to include it on my next album. This track is not only a testament to being inspired by others but also forming friendships through art.”
William Phillips aka. Tourist
Back to the new single, “A Little Bit Further” is a beautiful and captivating track that showcases Tourist’s talent and versatility as both an artist and as a producer, i.e. there’s a reason he won a Grammy Award. If you don’t get emotional, listening to a Tourist track, there’s something wrong with you. This one will do just that and definitely leave you wanting more. If you are a fan of Tourist’s previous work, you will love this new single. And if you are new to his music, this is a great introduction to his style and sound.
